Steam PHE Package at the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen

Rowett Institute, Aberdeen

Product:         Packaged PlantPac Units
Date:              October 2014

In a mission to become the 'foremost human nutrition research facility in the world' the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen County Council have redeveloped the existing site and developed a new state-of-the-art building. The new 107,639 sq ft building is located on the Foresterhill campus, in Aberdeen. The centre will boast the largest Human Nutrition centre in the whole of the UK, providing state-of-the-art laboratories and public areas.

The Rowett Institute heating system utilses steam as a primary heating source. As steam is commonly used in laboratories for sterilisation, building services engineers take advantage of this and use it for hot water and space heating. The latent heat from steam is far more effective than using sensible heat from hot water, as the rate of heat transfer is much greater giving instantaneous domestic hot water.
